Requested in "REQUEST & FILL CORNER" section...Songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and owner of a recording studio, DUANE EVANS become a highly requested single / commercials maker during the '80s & '90s, but his musical travel started long time before. After playing in several bands from the US East Coast, one day at the beginning of the Eighties Evans got a call from a friend... - Do you want to play in the band for Benny Mardones, whose 'Into The Night' single it's at the No. 5 on the Billboard charts? The association with Mardones lasted more than ten years, they wrote together dozens of songs and of course, Evans recorded on all '80s Benny albums including the cult classics 'Unauthorized', 'American Dreams' and the outstanding major label release '89 'Benny Mardones' alongside Jeff Porcaro, Dave Amato and Mark Mangold. In the meantime, Duane Evans had a publishing contract with Warner Chapel writing songs for other artists and many Hollywood movies. Plus, he played for Johnny Van Zant - even one of Evan's songs is included in the superb 'Van Zant' AOR album (Geffen Records, 1985).As you see, Duane Evans has an impressive pedigree as Melodic Rock / AOR musician & composer. And every musician wants to record his own songs...While managing his own recording studio and producing several artists / recording singles, Evans taped dozens of his songs in a highly professional quality.Around 2009 Evans compiled many of these tracks and put them on sale at some obscure digital stores under the name "Camel's Hump" [not related with me :-)], but I am not sure if still are available.Well, a reader requested the album here, and I found deeply buried into my archives a folder called "DUANE EVANS - Camel's Hump [demos / Benny Mardones related]". I don't know if the files here are demos of the final versions, but believe me, the sound is excellent. And the musical style is nothing short than the awesome '80s American AOR / Melodic Rock we all love.Tracks like the terrific mid-tempo "I Wanna Run To You", the Tim Feehan-like "Send A Message", or the classic melodic rocker "On The Brink of Your Love" are to die for."Ride Ride Ride" is pure radio-ready magic circa 1984 which seems designed for a movie soundtrack of the era, then "Only Love" is top class West Coast AOR in the best L.A. Session tradition. More quality appears in the breezy AOR of "I'll Be Loving You", the heart-breaking "The Lady In White" is like a Mardones missing (and great) track, while "A Night To Remember" bring to mind 1982 Rick Springfield."DUANE EVANS - The Camel's Hump (demos)" is pure gold, not only for AOR / Melodic Rock fans but also for collectors of rare, high quality material in this genre. I never seen this stuff posted / shared anywhere, and it's a shame, these terrific songs deserve to be listened by all. That's why I am here...This is one of the best posts in the long existence of this blog: AWESOME SONGS!01 - We Can Make It Work02 - Ride Ride Ride03 - I Wanna Run To You04 - Only Love05 - Send A Message06 - On The Brink of Your Love07 - I'll Be Loving You08 - The Lady In White09 - A Night To Remember10 - You Will Be Forever (Fly Baby Fly)11 - I'm Just A Kid (In A Rock 'n Roll Band)12 - You Get What You Get13 - Party For The Planet14 - The Red Ribbon Song (There's Also Hope)15 - Fly Baby Fly [instrumental]DUANE EVANS - The Camel's Hump (demos).

This RENEGADE from Canada was already featured here in the very early years of this blog, almost 9 years ago. Now it was requested by a reader, and I think these guys deserve a revamp as their music is one of that 'lost '80s gems' deserved to be listened by everyone.Hailing from Vancouver, British Columbia, Renegade existed since the early Eighties with various incarnations. Founder and chief songwriter Jim Buckshon went on to play in Matrex (another great unknown Canuck band) and Renegade disbanded. But the group returned in the middle '80s again with Buckshon as leader. Between 1985/87 Renegade toured the Pacific Northwest area, recording several songs in between at various studios. These are the tracks featured in "On The Edge", finally appeared in 2004. Why Renegade were not signed by a major label is beyond me, as their sound and style is pure AOR / Melodic Rock in the vein of Honeymoon Suite, Haywire, Worrall, etc.Ironically, some of Renegade's musicians now own a recording & publishing agency, and all their material was finally released through there (in reverse): "Back From The Dead" recorded 88/89 appeared in 2001, while "On The Edge" [recorded 1985-1987], as said, in 2004.
"Back From The Dead" is my favorite of the two; tracks like 'Standing Out In The Rain', the delicious 'The Best Of Me', 'Prisoner Of Your Heart', the anthemic 'Big City Nights' (produced by master Mike Fraser) are primo AOR / Melodic Rock numbers."On The Edge" features a different vocalist with a more rocking approach, being 'Take A Chance On Romance' (quite similar to Joseph Lee Wood, other artist featured here on the blog), the smooth 'Angel Of Love', title track and the slightly pompy 'Call To Glory' are among my picks from the bunch.Renegade is one of those bands which shoulda been huge, armed with terrific melodic songs and catchy choruses plus a really solid musicianship. You need their two albums in your AOR / Melodic Rock collection.

Requested in "REQUEST & FILL CORNER" section...Founded in the mid-Eigthies by L.A. resident axe-man J.P. Cervoni, NOVA REX never surpassed its indie status but managed to release by themselves a bunch of very interesting albums. Their debut "Blow Me Away" gained cult devotion among Melodic Hard Rock / AOR aficionados, and rightly so. Opening with two decent 'hair metal' tracks in the rocker 'Bitch' and the power ballad 'Think Of Me', the real thing start with song number 3...
'Children Of The Night' is the type of tunes that makes you raise your fist and sing-along all over. The main hook is terrific, and the chorus turns it a prime Melodic Hard Rock anthem. In many ways, it sounds more British AOR (akin After Hours or Peroux) than American, with all 'that' classic vibe. The previous track worth the album alone, but Nova Rex delivers another two gems in a row: the pumping midtempo AOR of 'Can't Find Love' (recalling masters Le Mans) is to die for, while 'Alone Tonight' is pure gold - the highly layered harmony vocals, the sharp guitars, and the killer chorus gives you a hint what '80s AOR is all about. The album is completed with the nice acoustic number 'Black 'N' Blues', and closer title track 'Blow Me Away', a furious melodic hard rocker full of hot blood.
Nova Rex released their second effort "Ain't Easy Being Cheesy" two years after, with new vocalist and a more rocking approach. The anthemic 'Don't Give Up', the stadium-designed 'Rock n' Roll', and the ballad 'I Luv You' are among the best cuts here, plus a re-recorded version of 'Alone Tonight'.
Nova Rex was one of the best indie American bands out there during the early Nineties, and while their melodic hard rock sound was not the most original, when they decided to mix it with AOR flavors the results were delicious. The aforementioned 3 tracks are definitely must-haves to any serious fan of the genre.Blow Me Away (1992)1 - Bitch2 - Think Of Me3 - Children Of The Night4 - Can't Find Love5 - Alone Tonight6 - Black 'N' Blues7 - Blow Me AwayAbbie Stancato - lead vocalsJ.P. Requested in "REQUEST & FILL CORNER" section...This request is a pleasure to fulfill; "Under A Raging Moon", the 1985 solo album by The Who's vocalist ROGER DALTREY.Despite the record was commercially pretty successful, not much people know that Daltrey's music around the mid-Eighties had a very different vibe than The Who. In fact "Under A Raging Moon" is a true '80s product, both in sound & style. With a glossy production courtesy of Alan Shacklock (Bonnie Tyler, Jeff Beck) who also play various instruments and co-wrote a song, "Under A Raging Moon" sounds like a cross between John Parr and Bryan Adams Eighties recordings. So it is not strange that the Canadian songwriting team Bryan Adams / Jim Vallance contributed two tracks here, and John Parr the title track.Daltrey's bandmate in The Who Pete Townshend provided opener 'After The Fire', originally written for The Who to perform at Live Aid during their reunion show, but that never happened. Townshend gave it to Daltrey instead, and became the album's hit reaching the # 48 at the Billboard singles chart. We have more quality tracks in the melodic 'Breaking Down Paradise' penned by Russ Ballard (who also plays guitar), the excellent 'Don't Talk to Strangers' including a beautiful guitar solo by Robbie McIntosh (The Pretenders), the AOR 'Move Better in the Night' written by the great Chris Thompson and talented Stevie Lange, or the pure '80s 'It Don't Satisfy Me'.Speaking about the Bryan Adams / Jim Vallance songs, 'Let Me Down Easy' it's like a clone of Adams' hit Somebody (from his Reckless album), while 'Rebel' is a completely different beast, a moody rocking mid-tempo plenty of substance. Then we have title track 'Under A Raging Moon', a very special song. It is penned by John Parr (who also contribute backing vocals), but he wrote it as a tribute to the late The Who drummer Keith Moon, so it's was more than appropriate to be recorded by Roger Daltrey.Apart from the touching lyrics (and a passionate vocal performance by Daltrey) there's a true 'drummer' tribute featuring seven stars in this matter performing a part: Roger Taylor (Queen), the great Cozy Powell, Martin Chambers (Pretenders), The Police's Stewart Copeland, Carl Palmer (ELP, Asia), Mark Brzezicki (The Cult) and Zak Starkey, the latter playing drums all over the record as well. The presence of Zak Starkey is also a special note: apart of being Ringo Starr's son, his godfather was... Keith Moon. At age 8, Zak became interested in music when Moon gave him a drum kit. "Under A Raging Moon" was Starkey's second album that he had worked on (at the time only 20 years old) and he does a stupendous job. Later he became a highly requested drummer having played with Oasis, The Waterboys, The Who and many more.
"Under A Raging Moon" is a stupendous '80s album with strong melodic songs, top class musicians (even gifted Asia's John Payne provide backing vocals here) and terrific production.Incredibly, "Under A Raging Moon" never was remastered, but this UK edition on CD (including the extra track 'Love Me Like You Do' not present on the vinyl LP) sounds wonderful. As bonus, I put two tracks; the b-side of the 12'' Limited Edition Gatefold single 'Under A Raging Moon' - Daltrey's version of The Who's classics 'Behind Blue Eyes / 5:15' recorded live in 1985 - and 'Quicksilver Lightning', Daltrey's main title track for the Quicksilver movie soundtrack (1986).A true '80s delight.01 - After The Fire02 - Don't Talk To Strangers03 - Breaking Down Paradise04 - The Pride You Hide05 - Move Better In The Night06 - Love Me Like You Do [CD only]07 - Let Me Down Easy08 - Fallen Angel09 - It Don't Satisfy Me10 - Rebel11 - Under A Raging Moon12 - Behind Blue Eyes + 5:15 (Live) [12'' B-side, bonus]13 - Quicksilver Lightning [Quicksilver OST, bonus]Roger Daltrey - lead vocals, keyboardsMark Brzezicki - drums, percussionJohn Siegler, Tony Butler - bassRobbie McIntosh - guitarsBryan Adams - guitarsRuss Ballard - guitar and harmony vocals (Track 3)Nick Glennie-Smith - keyboardsMark Feltham - harmonicaBruce Watson - E-bowMark Williamson - harmony vocals (Tracks 2, 6)Annie McCraig - backing vocals (Tracks 3-5, 7, 8, 11)John Payne - backing vocals (Tracks 3-5, 7, 8, 11)John Parr - backing vocals (Track 11)Alan Shacklock - keyboards, sequencing, acoustic guitar, synths, percussion, productionOn track 11, drummers in order of performance:Martin ChambersRoger TaylorCozy PowellStewart CopelandZak StarkeyCarl PalmerMark BrzezickiMark Brzezicki and Zak Starkey - outroROGER DALTREY Under A Raging Moon + bonus.

Caryl 'Mack' Parker is an award-winning, Americana singer / songwriter established in Nashville since the mid '90s, enjoying to this day considerable success as solo artist, session vocalist and writer for other musicians. But Caryl started his career in the Eighties in the independent music scene of Portland with the stage name CARYL MACK, recording this, his self-titled debut in 1984.A private release only appeared on vinyl LP "Cary Mack" has all the classic female fronted melodic rock winks from the era, an admixture of soaring vocals, sharp guitar riffs and melodic choruses. There's driving rockers in 'You Were Right There', 'Take A Number' and the spiraling 'Down On My Knees', radio-ready AOR in 'If You Want Me' and the excellent 'Selfish Lover', some pop on 'Hit & Run' (akin Pat Benatar), and a superb ballad 'Between The Lines', where you can appreciate Caryl's velvet vocals aplenty.![CARYL MACK - Caryl Mack (1984) private release back]()
Nowadays a mega-rare LP and a collector's piece, "Cary Mack" - very well produced for an indie - it's a really enjoyable '80s MR / AOR disc. I did a little sound clean-up on this quite good vinyl-rip (not mine) to remove the pop&crackle. But there's more... after her self-titled LP, while composing and performing as session vocalist, Caryl Mack continued recording. In 1987 appeared the 7'' single "Secrets Of Your Heart", including the title track and the song 'Armed And Dangerous', both tracks produced by no-other than AOR genius Dann Huff. Expect a true second half of the '80s sound here.
An EP using her name and four new tracks was issued in 1988 (Caryl's first release on CD), and then in 1989 Caryl Mack released "Tried & True", a six-track indie only appeared on cassette. Three tracks from "Tried & True" are included in this file, all pure late '80s AOR tunes plenty of magic.I have added as well a demo recorded by Cary Mack of a song penned by talented Mark Baker (Signal, House Of Lords) in a time when vocalists were hired to perform songwriting demos to be tested by record company executives as potential singles.A really good collection of '80s songs.01 - You Were Right There02 - If You Want Me03 - Hit & Run04 - Between The Lines05 - Selfish Lover06 - It's Alright To Cry07 - Take A Number08 - Down On My Knees09 - Secrets Of Your Heart10 - Armed And Dangerous11 - It's You12 - Tried & True (Torches)13 - I'll Be The One14 - Ready Heart [demo]

Requested in "REQUEST & FILL CORNER" section...Easily among the best ten AOR albums released in 2000's, "Wonderland", the debut from Swedes KHARMA, blends like few classic early '80s Pomp with traditional Scandinavian Melodic Hard Rock sounds. The project started in the early Nineties with renowned Swedish session musicians writing and recording several demos, and it's clear they took the necessary time to polish these wonderful songs to the extreme. With the addition of outstanding vocalist Goran Edman and the late, excellent former Yngwie Malmsteen keyboardist Mats Olausson providing ivory magic, the group recorded "Wonderland" at the highly respected Bohus Studios.Mixing the pompy AOR melodies of Styx, Kansas and Journey with some Europe and alike harmony layers, backing vocals and guitar riffs, the result was a terrific piece of classic stuff. No fillers, All killers.Pompy gems like title track 'Wonderland', the orchestrated ballad 'Burn Forever' or the quite Kansas-like 'Don't Close Your Eyes' are interspersed with sharp melodic rockers like the vehement 'Free Yourself' and "Knowing You", alongside Scandi-AOR pearls such as "Standing Alone".This Japanese Edition features a fabulous track as bonus, the killer anthem "Cold As Ice", where the band rocks in full muscle. It's a shame it was not included into the world-wide version of the CD as it's one of the highlights.
Crowned by Edman's superb vocal performance (one of the best of his career) and a top notch production, Kharma's "Wonderland" is indeed a wonder, a mandatory listen for every AOR / Melodic Rock fan.01 - Free Yourself02 - Wonderland03 - Knowing You04 - Burn Forever05 - In Chains06 - Standing Alone07 - Part Time Lovers08 - Angel Eyes09 - Ray Of Sunshine10 - Spell On You11 - Don't Close Your Eyes12 - Hold On13 - Wings Of History14 - Cold As Ice (bonus track for Japan)Goran Edman – VocalsDragan Tanaskovic – GuitarsAtilla Szabo – Keyboards, piano, organJoel Starander – BassImre Daun – Drums, percussionMats Olausson – KeyboardsMichael Erlandsson - backing vocalsKHARMA - Wonderland [Japanese Edition].

Requested in "REQUEST & FILL CORNER" section...Despite of never achieving major national attention, BEAU COUP was one of the most popular Cleveland, Ohio area bands in the mid-80s.The project started in 1983 by vocalist Tommy Amato & guitarist Mike McGill, and after various line-up changes (even guitar master Tim Pierce and drummer Eric Singer among others were part of the band) finally with the addition of keyboardist / songwriter Dennis Lewin (coming from another cult band called Jonah Koslen and the Heroes) Beau Coup was complete. In fact, Lewin would become Beau Coup's main songwriter.Beau Coup released their first, self-titled mini-LP in 1984 also known as White Album, and one track from there, 'Still In My Heart', was picked up by Scotti Brothers Records to test the band nationwide, releasing it as 45rpm single distributed by CBS Records. It was very well received gaining extensive airplay, but as happened with many good bands from the era and Scotti Brothers, the recording contract vanished.Beau Coup did not give up, continued playing at the East Coast area and recorded their second effort, 'Born and Raised on Rock and Roll', again released through a private label. The group officially disbanded in the early '90s, but from time to time they reunite to perform for special events. As it happened in 2005 when Beau Coup decided to record some new songs and release them alongside some of their '80s tracks for the first time on CD.The result was this "Then & Now" appeared in 2006 in very limited quantities.
The CD features 5 songs taken from their two Eighties albums, the 5 new tracks (which most were composed in the '80s) plus 4 'bonus from the early days', all of them being the remaining tracks from the first EP.Beau Coup played classic mid-80s American AOR with that polished and clean sound we all love. And that's what you'll find here in spades.Tracks like the atmospheric 'Sweet Rachel' (the best song Honeymoon Suite never wrote), the pumping 'Born & Raised [On Rock & Roll]', the anthemic 'Jane', or the aforementioned single 'Still In My Heart' (a super ballad), are to die for.But my favorite of the bunch is 'Somewhere Out In The Night'. Simply put, this awesome midtempo is the true definition of '80s AOR, and a must have track in any collection. The five new tracks were recorded by the guys trying to respect the classy sound of the band, and are nicely done with 'Try To Love Again' (some Loverboy on it) and the uptempo melodic rocker 'Someone' among the best. The CD is completed by the rest of the '84 EP, all very enjoyable as well.
Long time American AOR fans already known Beau Coup - their second album was featured here at the very beginning of this blog, now deleted - as one of the finest this genre offered, especially speaking about indie acts. But believe me, Beau Coup does not sound 'indie' at all; songwriting, musicianship and production are second to none. This group should have been huge alongside Loverboy, Honeymoon Suite, Survivor and bands of that ilk.A Must.THEN:01 - Born & Raised (On Rock & Roll)02 - Sweet Rachel03 - Somewhere Out In The Night04 - Still In My Heart05 - JaneNOW:06 - Forever 07 - So In Love With You08 - I Need A Night09 - Try To Love Again10 - SomeoneBONUS:11 - You Made Me Believe (In Miracles)12 - Someday We'll Be Together 13 - Don't You Believe It14 - Desperation Blvd Tommy Amato - Lead Vocals & Background VocalsFrank Amato - Lead Vocals & Background VocalsMike McGill - GuitarsDennis Lewin - Keyboards, Background VocalsBill March - Bass, Background VocalsDonald Krueger, Jimmy Clark, John Frania - DrumsJohn Dean - BassRodney Psycka - Percussion, Background VocalsBEAU COUP - Then & Now.

Many readers are asking why I don't post music articles more frequently. Simple; I don't have too much time in my hands. It takes a lot time to prepare; the rip, sometimes vinyl restoration, a conscientious re-listen, write a proper review, etc.So as there's a high amount of requests in the Request & Fill Corner, Chat Box and Comments, I will try to post more 'on the fly': brief reviews, wider music genres, etc.Tell me what you think about it...This one was requested in one post comments: Canadian musician EDDE MAXX's album "Hot Paint" from 1993. Requested in "REQUEST & FILL CORNER" section...Every American AOR fan recognize GIUFFRIA as one of the best exponents the genre had to offer during the '80s. Founded by ex-Angel keyboardist Gregg Giuffria, the band released two celebrated albums between 1984-86. In 1987 the group recorded pre-production tracks for a third album tentatively named Pleasure Palace that never was. This compilation feature most of these recordings, some of them later appeared in Giuffria vocalist David Glen Eisley's solo release called The Lost Tapes, others remain officially unreleased.I have added as well the 3 tracks composed & recorded by Giuffria for the movie Gotcha!: "Say It Ain't True" it's the only available on CD included into the band's second album reissue (this is the remastered version), while the other two are ripped from the vinyl LP official Motion Picture Soundtrack.Additionally, there's a nice Giuffria live recording with good soundboard quality, taped in 1985.

Requested in the Chat BoxLYNN ALLEN should be one of the most long lasting bands from the American melodic rock scene. Formed in the early '80s, despite the revolving door of group members but carried by singer / songwriter Billy Peiffer at front, the band continues active to this day.Perhaps the key is that Lynn Allen always stayed independent, managing their gigs and releasing albums by their own. After some years of hiatus Lynn Allen returned in 2007 with a record edited by an European label, but retaining the entire artistic control.Hailing from Davenport, Lynn Allen was recently inducted to the Iowa Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame. In the mid-Eighties for a brief period the group lived in Los Angeles and opened for Ratt, Great White or Warrant, with a major record deal at front of the door. But never happened and the guys returned to their hometown.Lynn Allen's third album (self-titled), also known as 'The Pink Album', always has been their more hard to find. Released through the small private label Red Pump, the CD virtually sold out after its release (they are very popular in US Quad Cities region) and never reissued. A shame, as "Lynn Allen"(1992) is one of their best.Cuts like 'Surprise, Surprise', 'Drive Me Crazy', 'Once In A Lifetime' (not the Firehouse song but sounding a lot like 'em) and 'Poisoning Of The Rain' are pure American Melodic Rock bliss. They harden the sound a bit in 'Love Slips' or 'Electric Sister' yet all the time extremely melodic and catchy. 'Pick Up The Pieces' and the strong 'Jesse' are the slow moments, being the latter a tune that easily could have been a hit on par with Poison or Tesla power ballads.
With solid songs, musicianship and a really good production for an indie, "Lynn Allen" is a lovely slice of American Melodic Rock in its true essence.01 - Surprise, Surprise02 - Drive Me Crazy03 - Love Slips04 - Jesse05 - Electric Sister06 - Poisoning Of The Rain07 - Once In A Lifetime08 - Daze Gone By09 - Pick Up The PiecesBilly Peiffer: vocals, guitars, keyboardsTerry Murphy: guitarsJohnny Williamson: bass, backing vocalsTommie Guild: drums, backing vocalsLYNN ALLEN - Lynn Allen (1992).

Requested in "REQUEST & FILL CORNER" section...Founded by Canadian vocalist / drummer Michael Shotten and bass player Matthew Gerrard (a songwriting duo contributing songs for Triumph among others) plus Croatian born guitarist simply called Mladen, VON GROOVE born in Gerrard's own basement recording studio in the early Nineties. The tapes they recorded sounded so great that A&M Records signed the band and decided to release the material without modifications.
However A&M wanted some 'sure fire' potential single hits, so Von Groove agreed to re-record 4 of the songs in Los Angeles with super-drummer Deen Castronovo (Bad English, Hardline and now in Journey) and famous (and talented) Richie Zito producing.
Simply put, "Von Groove" is one of the greatest Melodic Hard Rock records ever made. Requested in "REQUEST & FILL CORNER" section...Not to be confused with the female-fronted act of the same name, this WITNESS is the Philadelphia-based band who enjoyed considerable popularity in the Pennsylvania / New Jersey area during the first half of the '80s.Witness is often remembered for their energetic performances, but also for their flamboyant 130,000 watt light show, some kind of a record at the beginning of the decade for an indie band without national management. In 1980 Witness released a 45rpm single which sold like hot cakes, and continued with a busy show schedule. In 1983, Witness went into the studio again to record "Witness", a miniLP including 6 wonderful tracks. The sound & style is first half of the Eighties Pomp / AOR with a Melodic Rock pulse in-between. Just check the melodic bliss of 'One Good Reason' with a Balance feel, the pompy synths of 'Make Me Feel Right' in the best Arc Angel vein, or the Journey influenced anthem 'You Don't Know'.If you need a pure Pomp number, 'Theresa' fits in that category, a terrific pumping track with all the '80s magic. "Look Around" is a great midtempo ballad again with a Steve Perry & Co atmosphere, and why not, REO Speedwagon. Then 'You Do It Anyway' adds a bluesy touch to its melodic rock heart, very dynamic as well."Witness" was a private release vinyl pressed in limited quantities which become sold-out soon. Never reissued in any form (such a crime), in 2007 the band and former member Mitchell Schecter decided to release by themselves a CD with all Witness recordings. We have here the '83 miniLP but also the band's impossible to find first single, two unreleased tracks from 1984 showcasing the group with a more poppy AOR sound and electronic drums, plus two live tracks.
Obviously the transfer was done from vinyl as the master tapes were lost, and although all was pretty home-made done, the sound is fine. I did a little clean-up & enhance in the Camelblue's way...This the kind of requests that are a pleasure to fulfill, as this material not only is extremely rare, but at the same time damn good.A must for collectors, and suckers for timeless '80s Pomp AOR.01 - One Good Reason02 - Make Me Feel Right03 - You Don't Know04 - Theresa05 - Look Around06 - You Do It Anyway07 - She Gets Down (1980 single) (bonus track)08 - Finally Fallen In Love (1980 single) (bonus track)09 - Bleedin' In The Heart (unreleased) (bonus track)10 - She Made Me Cry (unreleased) (bonus track)11 - When I'm With Her (live) (bonus track)12 - One Good Reason (live) (bonus track)Billy Spence - vocalsMike Disston - guitarsSteelman Disston - guitarsMike LaBuono - keyboards, synthsRoy Altemus - bassTim Rooney - drumsKent Warner - bassMitchell Schecter - drumsWITNESS [Special Extended Edition 2007] (1983).

Requested in "REQUEST & FILL CORNER" section...This NORTHERN STAR (there were various band under this name) was based in the Hudson Valley, New York, and was active the early '80s playing all over the East Coast (even Florida) and opened for some major acts. The group recorded Northtern Star "I" in 1985, their only album, released through small record label Dead Pidgeon on vinyl LP.Influenced by Journey, especially vocalist Joe Cutrera owner of a vocal style similar to Steve Perry, the album includes some Pomp and melodic progressive touches as well. With a polished production for an indie, "I" rocks with tracks like the spiraling '(When You Die) You're Done', 'I Wanna Take You Home', 'Extreme Pain' and 'When Will It Ever End?', while there's more melodic rock oriented tunes such as 'A Girl Of A Different Kind', the pompy 'Crank' and 'Slow Down'.The latter was released as single as well (something unusual for indie bands) with 3000 copies sold in two weeks. It made the Top 100 in FM Stations on the East Coast.Even more proof of Northern Star's quality: opening track 'Back To Earth' - a superb Pompy mysterious composition - was nominated as 'Best Rock Instrumental Performance' in 1985 Grammy Awards alongside Yngwie Malmsteen, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jeff Beck and Jon Butcher (Beck won the prize). The album title is interesting too: "I" is not number 1, it's the capital letter 'i' and plays with 'eye' in reference to the eye shown on the LP cover with the Northern Star logo as the pupil. After the group disbanded all members continued in the business, most notably Cutrera fronting Feed The Rhino.
Northern Star "I" is a collectors item with original LP copies being sold at really high prices. It's a truly good album with solid songs, great guitar playing and soaring vocals, all with that '80s atmosphere impossible to replicate nowadays.Vinyl-rip cleaned by me including artwork - Very Recommended01 - Back To Earth (a.Tranquillity, b.Re-Entry)02 - Slow Down03 - A Girl Of A Different Kind04 - (When You Die) You're Done05 - I Wanna Take You Home06 - Crank07 - Turn Your Head08 - Extreme Pain09 - When Will It Ever End?10 - Back To Earth (reprise)Joe Cutrera - lead vocals, percussionAnton 'Buck' Buckheit - guitarsTom Moore - bass, keyboards, backing vocalsBob Mosher - drumsNORTHERN STAR (USA) - I (1985).

Someone asked for material by vocalist Bruce Papa (aka "Dartanyan") previous to his band CINEMA. I think it's better first to present here Cinema's one and only album "Break The Silence", as truly deserves a place in your '80s Melodic Rock / AOR collection. This NY based 5-piece was strongly influenced by the classic Pompy AOR sounds from the golden era, and despite of being released in 1986 (private vinyl LP), the sound in "Break The Silence" owes more to the early Eighties than anything. The album is plenty of keyboard/synth driven wonderful tunes like 'So Lost In Love', the Journey-like 'Suburban Lines', title track (some Prophet on it), and the lovely 'Ruby', perhaps the more mid-80s sounding track on the album. For years "Break The Silence" was impossible to find, a true AOR fan collector's piece. Then some time ago was put on CD for the first time plus 6 juicy previously unreleased tracks.A worthy addition to your collection.

Requested in "REQUEST & FILL CORNER" section...ESSENCE was active in the tri-state area, NY rock scene since the half of the Seventies to 1982. This was the previous band for vocalist / guitarist Bruce "Butch" Papa, also known as "Dartanyan" before founding Cinema, the group previously featured here on the blog.Essence's music is strongly influenced by classic progressive bands like Kansas and Styx, both at the peak of their popularity around those years. But we can hear as well a hard rock / pomp touch, a fusion that novel bands such as Journey or Roadmaster were developing at the same age.
Essence entered the studio to record their own songs in 1980, and although it is all solid material, a record deal never surfaced. The group continued playing with success but after some line-up changes, Essence split in 1982.This is an extremely rare material from my vault, never released. The sound quality is really good, including some little artwork myself made.RARE1 - Child Of My Own2 - Holdin' On3 - Out All Night Again4 - Pretenders5 - Hurts From The Last Time6 - No Warning7 - Matty8 - No More RainBruce "Butch" Papa - lead vocals, guitarGary Grill - bass, vocalsGeorge Tebbitt - guitar, vocalsRich Bifulco - keyboardsRich Lang - drums, vocalsESSENCE (NY) [unreleased].

Requested by a readerA highly respected singer / composer in his native Australia, PETER CUPPLES is still active today but his career started in the Seventies with various bands / projects along the way. During the '80s Peter fronted his own band, and after a successful locally released LP, Cupples was signed by major label Mercury. The idea was to launch Peter Cupples in the American market, so for this second album "Half The Effort, Twice The Effect", Musician’s Hall Of Fame inductee Louie Shelton (legendary guitar player for many stars) was brought to produce."Half The Effort, Twice The Effect" resulted a really American sounding album, with a lovely, polished and extremely melodic feel combining the best of the radio-rock from the era (1984) with poppy AOR waves and slashes of keyboards.'Don't You Leave Me Know' is plenty of synths and an infectious chorus ready for an '80s Action-Movie soundtrack, same with the festive 'Party Lights' and the elaborated 'Never Mind'. The sweet midtempo 'Love Of Another World' is a little gem, 'Let Me Crawl' has a LA Session fragrance with some Player on it, then 'Just Can't Live' is a great, elegant ballad full of '80s magic. Cupples deliver even more variation on the acoustically based 'Sitting Here', mixing the best Eagles' atmospheres / three-part harmonies.
At the end, ironically, "Half The Effort, Twice The Effect" never was released in America, nor on CD anywhere. Fortunately, with the help of some Aussie specialists Peter Cupples himself remastered the album and put it on CD for the first time in 2006, in limited quantities.Only available in Australia, this "Half The Effort, Twice The Effect" CD version has become a collectors piece (very expensive) for all Melodic Rock / AOR aficionados. You'll love this...01 - Don't You Leave Me Know02 - Let Me Crawl03 - Love of Another World04 - Just Can't Live05 - Never Mind06 - Party Lights07 - In The Pitts08 - Sitting Here09 - Do You Still Remember Me10 - On The RunLead Vocals - Peter CupplesGuitars, Backing Vocals - Ross InglisKeyboards - David HirschfelderBass, Fretless Bass - Brian HamiltonDrums, Percussion - Virgil DonatiPercussion – Mike FisherSax - Bill Reichenbach, Larry Williams, Dan HigginsHorns - Chuck Findley, Jerry HeySynthesizer - Christopher BoganSynthesizer, Backing Vocals - Cory FiteAdd. Requested by a readerSwedish vocalist Mikael Erlandsson achieved fame & fortune with Last Autumn's Dream, and more recently as well with Lover Under Cover, Heartbreak Radio, Salute and several projects. He also enjoyed considerable popularity in Scandinavia as solo artist during the '90s (some of his albums posted here on the blog), but his career started in the late Seventies.First, Erlandsson was part of a punk (!) band playing drums, later he switched to keyboards for the group The Studs while perfected his songwriting skills. In the mid-80s joined pop band N'Gang for the first time as frontman / vocalist, with a hit single in Swedish radio and an Eurovision Song Contest participation. Then in 1991 formed CRASH with brothers Eliasson (drummer Lars and guitarist Jan, who later was part of Danish rockers Push).Crash released their debut "Crash" in 1993 with the aim to capitalize the American Melodic Rock success at that time, so expect here a collection of tunes in that vein."Do The Dance Dirty" opens with an urgent riff and a catchy chorus, followed by 'Close At Hand', a pure melodic rock track with a delicious multi-part harmony vocal work. The ethereal ballad 'Eyes Don't Lie' is perhaps the more 'Scandi sounding' song on the CD, and it's a really good one. Then on tracks like 'Angina' you can hear Crush replicating the USA sound of the genre being this one akin White Lion (check the guitar swirls), same with 'Through The Shadows' (very Extreme), or the acoustically filled 'October 18' much in the vein of Mr. Big's More Than Words. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as many groups were doing the same, and Crush are pretty good at it.
Only released in Sweden, this is perhaps the lesser known work of Mikael Erlandsson's career. He never recorded a bad album - solo or with a band - and "Crash" is a quite solid melodic hard rock CD as well.Well produced, composed and executed, "Crash" is a worthwhile addition to your Melodic Hard Rock collection.01. Requested in "REQUEST & FILL CORNER" section...HOUSE OF SPIRITS was founded in 1993 by vocalist Olaf Bilic and bass player Martin Hirsch from the ashes of their previous band Jester’s March, looking for a more elaborated sound. The pair recruited ex- Mekong Delta guitarist Uwe Baltrusch and colossal drummer Jörg Michael (Laos, Axel Rudi Pell, Saxon and recently Devil's Train) to complete the line-up and immediately started to pre-produce their first album.Titled "Turn Of The Tide", House Of Spirits' debut album blends elements from traditional German metal / hard rock with an accessible progressive feel plenty of melody. This album is often compared to Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime and Empire highlights, but House Of Spirits' feel is less dramatic and much more melodic. With most of tracks in a mid-tempo vein built around elaborated, clean guitar arrangements and greatly crafted choruses, "Turn Of The Tide" is a truly remarkable record.Songs like the pumping 'Keep Me From Dreaming' or the quite melodic 'In My Heart' (including keyboard layers and acoustics into the mix) are quite memorable with an indubitable Queensryche's Empire-era feeling: a huge bass line, grandiose vocals, 'floating' drums - you get the picture. The sizzling guitars on title track 'Turn The Tide', the broken riff of 'Wasteland' and the almost AOR atmospheres in 'He Waited' (superb guitar solo) are some of the other notable moments on this CD.
House Of Spirits and this "Turn Of The Tide" (the group recorded another album before disbanding) are pretty unknown, which is a shame as this is a truly awesome band / CD. Production is top notch, crystal clear and powerful.Certainly not the usual kind of records featured here on this blog, but believe me, it's a terrific album.01 - Dawn02 - Turn The Tide03 - Wasteland04 - Keep Me From Dreaming05 - Close To The Edge06 - He Waited07 - In My Heart08 - The Eye Of The Storm09 - In A Daze10 - Final Mistake11 - Time Has ComeOlaf Bilic: vocalsUwe Baltrusch: guitarsMartin Hirsch: bass, keyboards, vocalsJörg Michael: drums, percussionHOUSE OF SPIRITS - Turn Of The Tide.

Requested in "REQUEST & FILL CORNER" section...A blonde bombshell in her own right but owner of a really good set of pipes, in the mid-Eighies vocalist MARILYN MARTIN was ready to be the next rock&pop star. After doing backing vocals for many big names including Stevie Nicks, Don Henley, Tom Petty and Kenny Loggins, Marilyn got the chance to record the song 'Sorcerer' for the soundtrack of the '84 movie Streets Of Fire. Next, she did a duet with Phil Collins on 'Separate Lives', the love theme from another film, 'White Nights'. The single was #1 the USA and Marilyn Martin got a record contract with Atlantic Records.
"Marilyn Martin", her self-titled debut was a glossy, big budget production with many renowned names in this matter involved including Phil Ramone, Arif Mardin, Jon Astley and even John Parr in one track.Despite the slick, at times high-tech sonic approach, this album has a 'rocking' background with strong arrangements and superb session musicians participating.Although none is mentioned into the credits, a young Reb Beach and Dann Huff among other talented cats recorded here. So expect excellent musicianship.
Alongside the commercial tunes with a synth-pop direction, you have really great songs like the AORish 'Beauty And The Beast' (the John Parr produced track), midtempo 'Too Much Too Soon', 'Wildest Dreams' or the pumping 'Night Moves'.Despite the record got good sales - as her second, appeared in 1988 - Marilyn Martin's success turned out to be short-lived, being dropped by Atlantic and never recording another album.
"Marilyn Martin" only was released on CD in Japan. There is a Wounded Bird Records reissue from some years ago, but only features the original LP 10 tracks. This Japanese Edition features 2 bonus tracks, including the 1985 duet 'Separate Lives'.Additionally, I added two extras; the really nice Streets Of Fire OST song 'Sorcerer' and a quite rare track recorded by Marilyn Martin for one of Tatsuro Yamashita's projects.A true '80s album.01 - Body And The Beat02 - Night Moves03 - Too Much Too Soon04 - Turn It On05 - Thank You*06 - One Step Closer07 - Beauty And The Beast08 - Move Closer09 - The Dream Is Always The Same10 - Here Is The News11 - Wildest Dreams12 - Separate Lives (Love Theme From White Nights)*Extras:13 - Sorcerer +14 - Your Eyes #* Japanese bonus tracks+ from Streets Of Fire OST 1984# from Tatsuro Covers From Coast; The Nexus 1990MARILYN MARTIN - ST [Japan release +2] (1986).
